Appraisal of the Beltana zinc deposit continued during the current licence period, principally by diamond drilling (6 holes, total 2570 feet) aimed at delineating blind extensions to the main orebody on its southern side. The drilling was very successful, and revealed a tendency of this southern ore zone extension to pass abruptly from high-grade zinc mineralisation (willemite) to high-grade lead mineralisation (hedyphane) at depth. In light of this, previous diamond hole B25 was extended vertically downwards by 217 feet, to probe immediately beneath the main orebody, but no appreciable mineralisation was encountered. In addition, a downhole IP survey was performed to a depth of 1000 feet in diamond hole B67 on the southern extension, but the results gave no indication of any sulphides in close proximity to the hole. Geological mapping at 1:480 scale has been completed, which now covers the entire set of ore occurrences at Beltana within Mineral Claim 5350, viz. the northern outcrop, the central orebody, the main orebody, and its southern extension, utilising all of the accrued surface and subsurface drillhole data. The mapping carried out just to the north of the central orebody shows a north-westerly trend to the strike of mineralisation, and a diapiric apophysis has been found which cross-cuts this attenuating ore zone. Other exploratory activities lately undertaken by E-Z within SML 153B, beyond the Beltana deposit Mineral Clain boundaries, have included a gravity survey across the southern part of the Beltana ore zone, auger drilling and evaluation of the minor zinc mineralisation that occurs in limestone breccia at the Emu prospect, and structural and stratigraphic field mapping at 1:2400 scale to attempt to clarify the contact relationship between the Beltana Diapir and the Ajax Limestone. 4973 feet of exploratory percussion drilling in 20 holes failed to locate any other economic mineralisation. Further mineral chemistry and ore beneficiation tests were conducted on large tonnage samples taken from the orebody proper and also from the hanging wall and footwall blocks. Wet trommelling followed by a series of varied density heavy media separation passes have yielded zinc concentrates of approximately 80% Zn from crushed, clayey dolomitic feed ore having a head grade of only 19.3%. This result demonstrates the likely value of on-site ore treatment processes proposed for the Beltana mine facility.
