Exploration for Beltana - type stratabound, hydrothermal related base metal deposits in an area situated south-west of Copley consisted of regional, ground and helicopter-assisted geological mapping at 1:4800 scale, photointerpretation of structural features, reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment sampling, and test percussion (23 holes, total 2790 feet) and diamond (27 holes, total 5395 feet) drilling of two outcropping willemite orebody discoveries, designated Aroona 1 and Aroona 2, which have subsequently been mapped in detail at 1:480 scale. The larger, Aroona 1 deposit outcrop is 800 feet long and 20 feet wide, and appears identical in texture to Beltana ore. 17 percussion holes put down at Aroona 2 downgraded that orebody to subeconomic status, but the more intensive delineation drilling at Aroona 1 proved that orebody to be viable down to at least 140 feet below surface. Preliminary plans have been drawn up for mining Aroona 1 in conjunction with the Beltana deposit. Ore reserves at Aroona 1 within the planned open pit limits are an estimated 120,620 tons, with an average grade of 41.8% Zn.
