As part of CRAE's programme for brown coal exploration in the Murray Basin in South Australia, airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys were undertaken in the vicinity of Lakes Albert and Alexandrina by contractors Geosearch and Geoex. Various structural and lithological features were recognized in the Kanmantoo Group rocks and Delamerian granites which are believed to form the basement to Tertiary coal measures. Based on known Murray Basin coalfields and some theoretical considerations, a geological/geophysical model for brown coal deposition has been developed, and four target areas have been selected by application of this model to the geophysical interpretation map. Subsidiary targets for kimberlite and uranium were also identified during the interpretation, and are discussed.
