The area of EL 2544, centred 90 km north-east from Adelaide, was considered to be prospective for porphyry/skarn type and iron oxide - associated copper-gold (IOCG) systems related to high level intrusive igneous plutons. Initial exploration conducted by Normandy Gold targeted a belt of poorly exposed Cambro-Ordovician mafic and felsic intrusive rocks extending along the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Interpretation of data from airborne magnetic/radiometric surveys, including the data from both Government (TEiSA) and private surveys, identified a number of discrete magnetic anomalies which were subsequently drill tested with 22 vertical diamond-tailed rotary mud holes (2757 m pre-collared, 479.8 m NQ diamond cored) and four RC holes (total 240 m). These holes encountered a range of basement lithologies including mafic/ultramafic to felsic intrusives, mafic volcanics and volcaniclastics, and metasediments. In most cases the magnetic anomaly being tested was found to be due to primary magnetite. Two holes intersected skarn-related magnetite. Trace metal assay results were not anomalous. Normandy Gold decided to exit the joint venture with Yardarino Mining. Attention then turned to the potential for finding Voiseys Bay style magmatic platinum group element-copper-nickel mineralisation associated with mafic/ultramafic intrusives of the Black Hill Complex, when BHP Minerals farmed in and became the exploration operator. Ground magnetic and ground TEM surveys were carried out at sixteen sites, aimed at identifying basement conductors representing magmatic sulphide mineralisation. No high quality conductors were detected. Stored samples from previous company drilling done at Black Hill were analysed by whole rock and trace element methods to look for evidence of chalcophile depletion and crustal contamination of the intrusives: this approach was a success, as it indicated platinoid-copper-nickel ore forming petrogenetic permissivity. Exploration continues over a reduced area.
