The Deep Well Dam area, which lies 60 km north-northwest of Olary, is located within the Palaeoproterozoic Olary Domain and encompasses rock sequences prospective for stratabound Zn-Pb and Cu-Au mineralisation. Initial work performed there comprised regional ironstone lag sampling, an airborne magnetic/radiometric survey, ground magnetics, CSAMT, TEM and IP surveys, and a short drilling programme (three RAB holes for 136 m total) to test the objective Pelite and Bimba Suites where they are thickest within isoclinal fold synforms. BHP Minerals then farmed-in to the project, re-assessed the regional geophysical data, carried out ground magnetic and gravity surveys, and completed reverse circulation drill testing of several targets (9 holes, 1594 m). No significant mineralisation was encountered, although the rocks drilled were all found to be significantly altered and potash-metasomatized. A review made by Rio Tinto of all previous work identified several new targets for which drill testing was planned. But as a result of Native Title access issues, the proposed drilling was postponed indefinitely, and attempts to secure a further joint venture partner were unsuccessful.
