Mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Proterozoic Giles Complex, which have intruded highly metamorphosed basement units of the Musgrave Block in an area 380 km WNW of Marla, were considered to have potential to host massive Ni sulphide mineralisation, whilst possible opportunistic targets included gold, PGE, diamonds and base metals. Initial work included reconnaissance field mapping, collecting rock chip and stream sediment samples for geochemical analysis, and conducting an orientation soil survey to sample colluvium from the bases of slopes where drainage is poorly developed. Assay values were mainly at background levels. A detailed aeromagnetic-radiometric survey, completed over the licence area as part of a larger regional survey, plus limited follow-up ground magnetic traverses, and a subsequent airborne EM (Tempest) survey, did not detect any anomalous buried magnetic or electrically conductive bodies that were considered by Rio to be worthy of further investigation.
