The Kingston coal deposit, located within a geographic area that extends between 20 and 40 km north-east of Kingston (South-East) township, comprises 985 Mt of lignite shallowly interbedded in Tertiary sediments, in a series of seams that now (in a State land administrative context) lie almost entirely within the Lacepede-Kongorong Prescribed Wells Area. A consultant's desktop hydrogeological review and a re-assessment of possible mining methods have concluded that a major impediment to development of any mine within this coal deposit is the current legislative and regulatory framework of the area's groundwater resources. As part of conducting its ongoing feasibility studies into the possibility of economically developing the Kingston, Bowmans and Lochiel brown coal deposits for greenfields electric power generation, NRG and the Flinders Power Partnership have maintained their participation in the national Co-operative Research Centre programmes addressing problems of low rank coal combustion and greenhouse gas emission control at existing and future electrical power generation plants. Research progress on the latest innovations to coal-fired boiler fluid bed combustion methods (circulating fluid and advanced pressurised fluid technologies) have been monitored, and an overseas study tour to inspect working coal facilities and research pilot plants was undertaken.
