Possible heavy mineral sand marine placer deposits occurring in the Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands of the Murray Basin were the targets of exploration in an area extending immediately north and south of Bordertown, and across to the SA/Vic. State border. Initial exploration performed by aircore drilling at sites 3-6 km apart along 13 widely spaced traverses (153 holes, total 3949 m) reported only sporadic and low-grade heavy mineral concentrations, so related licence partial surrenders were effected (see Env 9979). Subsequent infill aircore drilling at 100 m hole spacing, along parts of two of the most prospective traverses showing 'foreshore' and 'surf zone' lithotypes (278 holes, total 5802 m), confirmed the extent of prospective sand horizons beneath shallow overburden down to an average depth of 28 m, but no significant heavy mineral concentrations were encountered.
