TARGET: Coal in the northern Saint Vincent Basin. EXPLORATION: Rotary open hole and core drilling plus detailed geological and geophysical logging of 24 holes on Lake Bumbunga, designed to achieve coal sampling to 500 m centres in the area lying south of the 'neck' of the lake. Drill cores of 100 mm diameter were taken through the coal zone; two selected holes were fully cored from the surface to the base of the coal. RESULTS: The Lochiel coal resource was outlined. Geotechnical and sedimentological studies of the lake sediments were commenced, plus mine planning of a trial open pit, in order to meet State Energy Planning Executive directives.
