An area located 35 km south-east of Tarcoola was targeted for gold because of interpreted aeromagnetic data, which suggested the presence of discrete Archaean iron formations and mafic rocks within the more widely distributed Kenella Gneiss, a rock association that may possibly exist in settings analogous to those hosting the gold-bearing greenstones of Western Australia. An initial 9 line km ground magnetic/calcrete sampling traverse over one linear aeromagnetic anomaly returned no significant results. Regional calcrete sampling (1200 hand and auger samples) defined the Moolkra Prospect, an area ~2 km by 1.5 km, generally with results > 5 ppb Au, and up to 55 ppb Au in Area A, one of three sub-areas. RAB drilling to blade refusal along 15 traverse lines (175 holes, total 3059 m) was inconsistent in identifying gold in basement beneath the higher calcrete anomalies (best assay result 2 m at 1.87 g/t in MLK151). While broad coherent areas of anomalism were defined, three holes drilled across the zone of maximum calcrete anomalism (55 ppb Au) recorded no Au anomalism above basement. Further drilling in each sub-area (10 RC holes for 927 m, 14 percussion holes for 1274 m) confirmed the widespread presence of low order gold mineralisation in structurally complex gneissic basement, apparently associated with hydrothermal alteration greisens and north-west trending shear zones (e.g. 14 m at 0.390 g/t Au in MLK176, including 2 m at 2.2 g/t over the depth interval 18-22 m). Follow-up work, aimed at refining target areas, comprised a helicopter-borne magnetic survey of 2281 line km, geological mapping at 1:10,000 scale, rock chip sampling, and orientation BLEG stream sediment sampling. The rock chip sampling identified gold mineralisation to a maximum grade of 5.7 g/t Au at Moolkra South, where no calcrete anomalism had been recorded. Additional drilling at Moolkra (two RC holes, total 276 m) on some calcrete gold anomalies that were previously tested by RAB holes also re- confirmed the presence of low order gold mineralisation, here seen at deeper levels within the altered granitic and pegmatoidal basement (e.g. 24 m at 0.46 ppm Au in MLK200 from 90-114 m), but it was concluded that gold grades were not high enough to be economically viable. Exploration continues on a reduced area.
