Buried Palaeozoic basement, considered as being geologically possibly analogous to the Mount Read Volcanics, was the target of exploration for gold and base metals in the vicinity of the Naracoorte Caves, 12 km south-east of Naracoorte. A ground gravity survey was completed, comprising 54 stations at ~1-2 km spacing. Anomaly source modelling indicated a dense body at a depth of at least 550 m, which is almost too deep to drill test. Infill gravity surveys were proposed to better define the body, but a shift of exploration priorities elsewhere led to no further work being undertaken.
