Known magnesite beds within the Adelaidean Skillogalee Dolomite were the targets of exploration in the southern Flinders Ranges, 20 km north-east of Port Pirie, to determine their viability for mining as potential feedstock for a planned magnesium metal refining facility intended to be built at Port Pirie. Field mapping, together with an airborne infrared hyperspectral survey (Hymap), identified up to nine beds of magnesite in the Germein Gorge area, ranging up to 1.5 m in thickness. Confirmation of the extent and continuity of these beds will require a fully cored drilling programme. However, it was considered that such a programme could not be justified in view of the environmental sensitivity of the area and the poor access for drilling.
