Base metal mineralisation, indicated by newly discovered shafts at the historic Atkinson Pb-Ag-Cu-Zn mine, was the impetus for exploration in the upland area 20 km north-west from Cowell. Grab samples collected from shafts, stockpiles and dumps varied widely in zinc (up to 39%) and copper (up to 21%), with elevated silver but negligible gold. During this work the potential for ornamental dimension stone was noted in several outcrops of granite and marble. Four large slabs of the former will be extracted in a trial mining campaign to be conducted soon, and then undergo expert sawing and polishing in Melbourne to allow commercial assessment by potential clients, while quarry offcut bulk samples of the latter will be appropriately processed in Angaston for evaluation as dolomitic marble dimension stone and as ornamental aggregate. Upon renewal of tenure at its first anniversary EL 2062 was incorporated into a larger area as EL 2167, under which title exploration is being continued.
