Exploration for gold in the eastern Adelaide Hills, in an area of Cambrian Kanmantoo Group sediments stretching from Kanmantoo in the south to Mount Rhine in the north, was undertaken initially by licence farminee East West Minerals utilising regional BLEG stream sediment sampling. When this company withdrew from the exploration funding agreement in August 1990, fourteen gold anomalous areas were subsequently followed-up by new joint venturer ACM Gold via infill BLEG sampling, and with soil sampling and drilling (four RC holes, total 469 m) at the historic Mount Rhine mine site. The results did not indicate any potential for large tonnage gold deposits. A concurrent evaluation of the andalusite / garnet potential of the Kanmantoo Group schists concluded that recovery of these minerals was not viable.
