In a search for the possible buried source primary sulphide orebodies to historically worked secondary copper mineral occurrences in Adelaidean metasediments exposed in the Arkaroola Creek and Barraranna Creek areas, a programme of prospecting, detailed 1:1200 scale geological mapping (in a strip passing down the centre of the SML) and rotary percussion drilling and geochemical analyses of drill cuttings was carried out (for 18 vertical holes totalling 4640 feet). The extensive prospecting effort revealed widespread weak copper mineralisation of stratabound/stratiform character, apparently fault-controlled and often closely associated with minor basaltic or trachytic intrusions, while some visible free gold was also found in gossans near the Welcome mine and in quartz reefs which cross-cut volcanic dykes present in the main SSW-NNE trending Paralana Fault zone. It was concluded that the likely size of the potential lode formations was too small to permit economical development.
