The natural organic compound Montan wax, extracted from drill core samples of lignites that are present in the Moorlands Coalfield, has been tested in West Germany by the Hoechst GmbH company. The wax was found to be of poor quality, with excessive iodine and resin contents, besides having an unsatisfactory colour to sell. In consequence of being given this advice, the licensee's consultant has lately been investigating whether there are possible alternative fuel or non-fuel uses for the lignites. It is now apparent that the total lignite reserves available at Moorlands are too small to permit consideration of their use for generating liquid hydrocarbons or synthetic natural gas. The same size limitation negates their use for the possible economic production of char[coal]. During early 1975, Adelaide Brighton Cement Ltd funded an analysis of the Moorlands lignite deposit drill core samples for determining their chloride content, to allow it to assess if the lignite has potential applications as a fuel within that company's manufacturing processes. The analytical data only are presented herein.
