TARGET: Possible sedimentary uranium deposits in the Jurassic Polda Formation and Tertiary Poelpena Formation. EXPLORATION: To reconnoitre contemporary soil radiometry in the area, the near-surface sediments penetrated by 135 auger holes (all drilled to 15 feet total depth) were tested for downhole radioactivity and radon gas content, and bottom hole cuttings samples were collected. Follow-up rotary drilling and electric geophysical logging of 45 exploratory holes to 500 feet or shallower basement, resulted in holes averaging 354 feet deep with an aggregate penetration of 15,939 feet. After commissioning palynology studies of the drilled sequence, to accurately identify the age of the sediments so that a palaeoenvironmental model of stratigraphic unit deposition could be compiled, a final 25 rotary holes totalling 5553 feet were drilled to detail a small area of interest located 4 miles south-southeast of Lock township. Two of the first-round holes (LDH28 and LDH32) were also twinned and rotary cored to obtain additional geological information. RESULTS: The drilling results were not encouraging. Only four of the initial auger drillholes were found to contain coincident radioactivity and radon gas anomalies. Analysis of the soil gas emanometry readings suggests that there has been separation of uranium from radium 226 (daughter Ra 222), probably by groundwater circulation. Subsequent rotary drillhole samples were described at 5 foot intervals for sedimentological and mineralogical features, but nothing of economic interest was seen. Slightly anomalous radioactivity was recorded associated with discontinuous thin lignites in the Late Jurassic Polda Formation, but none was found associated with sand units. The highest radioactivity occurred in holes LDH 32a and LDH 58, with 300+ counts per second recorded. Assay of the core from LDH32a gave 0.2 lbs/long ton U3O8 over the depth interval 281-282 feet.
