The seaward portion of the subject licences, comprising 52% of the combined original area granted, has been relinquished after a reconnaissance RC aircore drilling programme which targeted economic heavy mineral sands within Cainozoic marine placer deposits at the ancient transgressive margins of the Eucla Basin. Six drilling traverses were laid out along the verges of public roads spaced approximately 20 km apart, with holes put in at 400 m spacing and the downhole strata samples taken at 1.5 m intervals. After completing this initial drilling, it has been concluded that Eocene sedimentation over the relinquished ground was dominated either by fluvial sediments or by areas of erosion / non deposition now represented by shallowly subcropping basement, and the sequence tested is inferred to contain insignificant mineralisation.
