Exploration for possible economic Early Proterozoic stratabound Pb-Zn-Ag deposits of Broken Hill type, and for Olympic Dam style, Middle Proterozoic Benagerie Ridge volcanogenic sediment - hosted, epithermal / hydrothermal Cu-Au-Mo(-U) occurrences of a type similar to the nearby newly discovered Portia prospect, was undertaken over an area located about 100 km north-northeast of Olary. Following a review of previous exploration data and the conduct of detailed ground grid-based gravity surveys over promising magnetic anomalies at the Oberon and Titania prospects, 2 diamond holes totalling 1062 m were drilled to test the Au-Cu-iron oxide potential of a coincident gravity and magnetic complex in the north-east of the tenement. Both drillholes penetrated very strongly red rock altered, intermediate to mafic intrusive basement lithologies which lacked mineralisation, despite minor copper, lead and zinc anomalism being noted in quartz veins within the overlying Adelaidean pyritic metasediments. It was concluded from observations of drill cores that the K-Na altered metasediments and volcanics occur over a very large area near the Benagerie Ridge, and that there is no obvious correlation between iron metasomatism and Au-Cu mineralisation. Subsequently, a regional interpretation of gravity and magnetic data was undertaken with the aim of identifying large structures which may have been involved in Meso-Proterozoic basin development and, later perhaps, also involved in focussing hydrothermal fluids. The gravity interpretation indicated that there is a very large and apparently long-lived structure occurring in the vicinity of the western part of EL 2225; however, associated with it there is a subdued magnetic signature which may indicate a thick cover of Adelaidean metasediments such as that intersected in DD98EMU001 and DD98EMU002. In the eastern lobe of the tenement there are structures evident in the 4000 m and 2000 m upward-continued gravity data that coincide with a moderate magnetic response, which may indicate that basement is relatively shallower in the east of the tenement than in the west. The eastern part of the tenement contains an area where concentric magnetic rings are interpreted, and this pattern is thought to be consistent with a buried "Benagerie Ridge Type" magnetic complex. Within this buried magnetic complex are zones of varying magnetic intensity, and these are interpreted to be potential alteration zones related to Au-Cu mineralisation, similar to the known Benagerie Ridge mineralised system (i.e. the Portia, North Portia and Shylock occurrences) existing in Pasminco's adjoining EL 2152. Because of the lack of outcrop within EL 2225, it was recommended that either extra "stratigraphic" drilling needed to be completed, in order to define the geology of individual domains, or else more detailed geophysics should be undertaken with the aim of identifying anomalies for testing.
