Two peripheral areas of the subject licence have been relinquished owing to their perceived poor potential for containing economic palaeochannel uranium mineralisation within Tertiary sediments. Two rotary mud drillholes were drilled in the western relinquished area during 2003. Hole Y005 penetrated only massive reduced clays and silts of the Cretaceous Bulldog Shale (Marree Formation equivalent). Hole Y006 situated further to the east intersected a thinning section of the target Eocene Eyre Formation overlying the same Cretaceous unit. The Eyre Formation prospectivity here is considered to be minimal, while the Mesozoic sequence is regarded as likely to be too fine-grained to host economic uranium mineralisation. Sediments of the Miocene Namba Formation known to exist in the eastern relinquished area were deemed unprospective based on their distance from basement uranium source rocks, and because their interpreted shallow geological setting would pose a risk of widespread surface oxidation precluding roll-front ore deposition.
