Exploration for possible buried gold, copper and other economic metalliferous mineral deposits in a now relinquished area on Commonwealth Hill Station, lying 90 km south-southwest of Coober Pedy and 65 km east of the Challenger gold mine, has used mostly geochemical techniques to identify prospective localities in the predominantly shallowly-covered basement. The original work on the subject tenement was performed by Minotaur Gold during the period 1994-2001, when more than 15,000 regional and infill grid calcrete samples were collected, commencing with a 1.4 km apart staggered grid system and from there closing in on robust gold anomalies having > 10 ppb Au. Minotaur tested all of many such promising prospects with RAB/air core drilling plus some deeper RC holes where initial subsurface assay results warranted. Redport assumed operatorship of EL 2595 in April 2002 and immediately targeted six of the previously defined gold prospects. To confirm the calcrete anomalism a further 536 samples were taken at mainly 50 m intervals, while surface and regolith mapping was also completed to assist in locating the best sites to drill. During September 2002 Redport drilled 5 RAB/air core holes totalling 251 m on two traverses across the Eaglehawk prospect, the only one of the six chosen prospects that lies within the now relinquished licence area. These holes penetrated ?Archaean basement consisting of leucocratic granite containing rare biotite-rich shear bands. No significant gold mineralisation was detected.
