A small area of prospective Gawler Craton Proterozoic basement located in the vicinity of Hawks Nest Bore, which lies 160 km north-west of the Prominent Hill copper-gold discovery, was investigated to find the cause of one of a pair of intense regional magnetic highs that is associated with a domal fold structure in magnetic basement, a combination suggestive of the presence of a buried intrusive body. Previous exploration in the region had identified the presence within basement of pervasive calc-silicate - magnetite - albite - carbonate alteration, a feature elsewhere found proximal to Olympic Dam type IOCG deposits, while the presence of banded iron formation and garnet-rich sandstones in the basement to the east also gave scope for possible Broken Hill or Cannington style Pb-Zn-Ag occurrences. Work undertaken comprised a literature and drillhole sample review, acquisition of a detailed gravity survey over the target magnetic anomaly (966 stations on a 400 m x 400 m regular grid), follow-up fixed and moving-loop ground Sirotem surveys over resulting gravity anomalies, and diamond drilling (2 inclined holes totalling 847.5 m) to test a coincident gravity/magnetic anomaly and a separate gravity/conductivity anomaly, both of which lie inside the magnetically mapped basement fold closure. Neither drillhole intersected significant mineralisation, nor penetrated an igneous intrusion; instead, the basement sequence consisted only of barren magnetite-rich metasediments. In view of the disappointing drilling results, it was decided to surrender the licence.
