Two areas lying respectively south and south-west of Coober Pedy have been explored for Proterozoic basement-hosted iron oxide copper-gold deposits of Olympic Dam and Prominent Hill type, for Broken Hill style base metal mineralisation, and for craton margin magmatic-related nickel deposits, as part of a regional exploration effort partly joint-ventured across a significant tenement holding. Following the conduct of a review of all previous work and the commissioning of a consultant's regional structural re-interpretation based on recent company and government aeromagnetic and gravity coverage, plus making a field geological reconnaissance, new activity by Anglo American has comprised the re-logging and petrographic examination of stored drillhole cores and cuttings, and the acquisition and interpretation of ground gravity infill surveys (2018 stations on either 400 m x 800 m or 400 m x 1600 m grids) and of ground TEM surveys (26 lines totalling ~70 line km, using 200 m or 100 m loop coverage). Subsequent generation of potential drill targets that embrace discrete geophysical responses has defined three anomalous areas of questionable prospectivity, but none were drilled prior to the licensee deciding not to renew the subject licences at the end of their initial term.
