Titan prospect is located within Exploration Licence 3209, and lies 30 km north of the Olympic Dam mine. The prospect was first drilled by Western Mining Corp. in 1976 with diamond drillhole BD 1, and in 1981 with a second hole, BD 2. Both holes hit sub-economic grade copper and gold mineralisation in ?post - Middle Proterozoic metasediments. Tasman Resources commenced exploration at Titan in May 2000, first conducting surface geochemical surveys and testing a variety of geophysical techniques, then drilling a further six diamond holes. These holes were aimed at locating higher grade parts of the Titan mineralised system, targeted using geological modelling and geophysical data interpretations. Early in 2004, surface audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) electrical surveys conducted at Titan were successful in delineating features such as the cover sediments, the top of basement unconformity, and a number of interesting, untested conductors within the basement that could represent masses of high grade sulphides. Tasman was keen to test the strongest of the (basement) AMT anomalies, so support funding under the PACE Initiative, Theme 2 (Drilling Partnerships with PIRSA and Industry) was obtained in 2004 for the drilling of a single deep hole, TI008. This hole was designed to test a strong AMT anomaly on the eastern side of the Titan system, that coincides spatially with significant IP and residual gravity anomalies, and therefore could possibly be due to high grade mineralisation. Vertical diamond drillhole TI008 was completed at a total depth of 797.8 m in November 2004, having penetrated 176 m into the Mesoproterozoic Pandurra Formation. Apart from a narrow zone (about 5 m thick) of probable late-stage, remobilised sulphide mineralisation found at the upper, disconformable stratigraphic contact of the Pandurra Formation with younger, Adelaidean sediments, no significant sulphides were intersected. At this stage of work in the area, the cause of the strong AMT anomaly (or of the anomalous IP response) is not apparent from the drillhole results, since the narrow zone of sulphides is too thin and weak to be the cause of this strong anomaly. There appears to be no simple explanation for the lack of conductive rocks in TI008. It thus seems most likely that the potential ore-bearing zone of interest may have been just missed by TI008, or else that the conductive response in the AMT data may be due to saline groundwater lenses associated with faults formed on the eastern margin of the Titan system.
