A mine development and fuel technology applications study has been carried out on the Wintinna Coal Deposit to: 1. Determine the output tonnages of coal required for economic operation by opencut mining methods. 2. Compare the quality of Wintinna coal with other coals available to ETSA for power generation in South Australia. 3. Consider the benefits which could be anticipated by ETSA if a decision was made to purchase Wintinna coal for future power generation. 4. Consider the suitability of blending Wintinna coal with that obtained from Leigh Creek for use for power generation at Port Augusta, where new units are being installed to commence operation in the near future. 5. Examine the quality of Wintinna coal with regard to its export potential, and forecast the likely benefits which South Australia would derive if Balhoil could establish the deposit as a reliable source of premium quality coal for overseas markets. The mining study has been confined to the first twenty years in the life-of-mine development for the coal resource area, wherein 2,324 million tonnes of measured, indicated and assumed reserves have been delineated.
