In a search for possible economic epithermal / stratiform / metamorphic base metals and gold within the Weekeroo Inlier, detailed geological mapping, rock chip sampling and an office evaluation of previous exploration were carried out for the Weekeroo Hill and Walparuta mine areas. This work was followed up by the drilling of a single diamond hole 228.29 m deep in August 1974. Initial 1:50,000 scale geological mapping of the whole of the licence area established the presence within the Palaeoproterozoic basement inlier of an anticlinal structure with a quartzitic core flanked by migmatites, feldspathic gneisses and schists. Iron formations occur within the feldspathic gneisses, and are confined to the eastern part of the inlier at Weekeroo and Walparuta. Weekeroo has an extensive barite-magnetite occurrence, but rock sampling indicated only very low base metal and gold values, so no further exploration was conducted there. Detailed 1:1200 scale geological mapping and surface rock chip sampling performed at the Walparuta prospect disclosed a 1 km long geochemically anomalous horizon containing very low grade copper and gold mineralisation, part of which had been tested by previous explorers with shallow diamond drilling. Newmont's drilling of a new hole, DDH WP4, recorded only similar values at depth (29 m @ 0.3% Cu and 0.01 oz/short ton Au), thereby downgrading the potential of the prospect, where the mineralised zone cannot be extended any further to the south-west. The gold in it appears to be concentrated within an iron-rich magnetite-pyrite band 20 m thick that is developed just above the basal contact of the Walparuta Schist with enclosing feldspathic gneisses. Due to an inability to locate any additional mineralised areas elsewhere on the licence, it was decided to surrender tenure entirely.
