1:25,000 scale geological mapping and scout stratigraphic drilling (9 vertical rotary holes for a total penetration of 758.5 m) have outlined the general distribution of Adelaidean rocks in the Lake Macfarlane and Island Lagoon areas. Perhaps the most important feature, from an exploration point of view, is the local geometry of the post-Pandurra Formation erosion surface which controls the distribution of later sediments and is host to known copper mineralisation near Mount Gunson. This surface is exposed on the western edge of Lake Macfarlane, and slopes away to the east to form a broad shallow basin. Interpretation of geophysical data has shown a number of major faults, fractures and basic igneous dykes in the Carpentarian basement. Whilst on a broad scale such features may have affected the distribution of stratabound base metal deposition, the individual faults, fractures and dykes are not considered to be exploration targets. The apparent stratigraphic prerequisites for forming Mount Gunson type mineralisation (i.e. Whyalla Sandstone overlying Pandurra Formation) are not present in the Island Lagoon area. There are indications of base metal mineralisation present in shaly facies of the Tapley Hill Formation, but exploration to date has not indicated any specific target zones.
