Protracted exploration undertaken by an individual mineral prospector over a small area of rugged topography located in the north-central Flinders Ranges, approximately 25 km north-east of Leigh Creek, has addressed a number of potentially economic mineral commodities: alluvial gold and its possible buried hard rock sources (metasomatised, diapir - related volcanic and/or intrusive igneous bodies) in the vicinity of historic shallow surface gold workings; base metals in possible stratabound Mississippi Valley type deposits that are associated with karst development and hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marbles on a large anticlinal structure formed in Precambrian Balcanoona Formation metasediments; and a newly discovered ornamental stone resource in the region, where a uniquely coloured stromatolitic marble bed was found in the Balcanoona Formation at Mundy Springs, and subsequently many more attractively textured marble bodies of hydrothermal vein style were identified nearby in both Balcanoona and younger, Cambrian Wilkawillina Limestone strata. A portable heavy mineral separation plant which had earlier been used with some success at the Teetulpa Goldfield was brought to Boolooroo, and various promising, geologically representative sites of likely gold deposition were sampled and processed to gain an idea of the average gold grade in the cover materials and weathered bedrock. Selected samples of volcanic and carbonate rocks thought to be the local primary gold sources were assayed. No significant geochemical anomalies were delineated. During the search for evidence of MVT type mineralisation within the carbonate rock sequence on the licence, a number of visually unusual-textured marble beds were encountered. The licensee's economic evaluation of the potential of these marble occurrences led to the pegging of several Mineral Claims over them while he was engaged in the process of establishing data on the quality and distribution of certain marble features, and investigating the feasibility of mining and processing the host rocks to give stone products worthy of marketing. To date, the inferred reserves of such marble have been estimated from outcrop studies, and the aims of the envisaged marble extraction project have been presented in a draft business plan for a new mining company, Outback Marble Co., but permission to carry out trial mining of the different deposits has not yet been obtained.
