Three salt lakes that extend in chain-like fashion along the inner Coorong - Lacepede Bay shoreline, over a distance of 24 km to the north of Kingston (SE) township, have been investigated for possible economic evaporitic mineral deposits that may have formed within the Recent lakebed subsurface sediments. Reconnaissance and closer-spaced grid push-tube corehole sampling of these sediments was carried out at 50 sites to obtain samples for chemical analysis, and additional small bulk samples were dug out of the lakebeds at three locations to allow the determination of any desalinization effect that could be achievable through water-washing. The intent was to obtain a carbonate-rich product which would be suitable as a treatment for acid soils. The thin layers of white, unconsolidated ultrafine carbonate so tested were found to contain 5.5-6.5% NaCl, which renders the material unsuitable for agricultural purposes, even after several washings with fresh water.
