Evaluation of the feasibility of re-establishing salt production facilities at the abandoned solar salt works on the tidal flats at Point Paterson, 15 km south-east of Port Augusta, has been undertaken by the current local SA major salt producer Cheetham Salt Ltd. The site redevelopment evaluation process has included a review of past salt production there by Solar Salt / Augusta Salt during the period 1951 to 1963, economic studies, landholder liaison and the pegging of 10 Mineral Claims and 2 Retention Leases, preparing a preliminary environmental impact assessment, and baseline infrastructure planning and design for setting up or rebuilding as necessary a series of solar evaporation ponds. It appears that the site has the potential to produce 77,000 tonnes per annum of solar salt, but this amount needs to be increased to a profitable level for the project to proceed. Economic evaluation studies are continuing to be made for the land now secured under Retention Leases.
