Previous drilling in 2005, undertaken as part of another PACE project, DPY2-52, discovered significant occurrences of heavy mineral sands within an area of 15 km x 5 km in the southern part of EL 3092 (the Notrab prospect). These sands were interpreted as being part of a NE-SW trending palaeoshoreline barrier system within the Tertiary Eucla Basin. The 2006 drilling program was therefore designed to carry out more systematic coverage of Tertiary sands within EL 3092, and had the potential to upgrade the HMS prospectivity not only within the EL but also over an extensive area of interpreted Tertiary sand deposition in which little previous exploration has been carried out. The 2006 drilling was also designed to penetrate into the Archaean basement immediately underlying the Tertiary sands, thereby significantly adding to information about this basement in a poorly known area. The planned DPY3-22 drilling programme had to be significantly curtailed due to physical access and logistical problems, with a total of only 47 of the planned 171 holes completed for 1301.5 m aggregate penetration. However, this amount of drilling has extended the zone of +1% HMS occurrence for 5 km to the north-east, and has more clearly defined it as a NE-SW trending feature. The feature has been outlined on each of five E-W drill traverses, and is open to the north and south. The previously interpreted NE-SW trending, target Tertiary sand barrier is now potentially developed over an additional strike length of 20 km within EL 3092, whilst in the northern part of the tenement it is interpreted to merge with the NW-SE trending Barton Barrier. That place of merger could be a particularly prospective position. Although it is planned to complete the systematic sampling coverage of the target sands within EL 3092, it is now apparent that drilling in this area will require upgrading of the existing access track into the southern part of the tenement (Notrab area) from Barton Siding, plus the grading of a cadastral survey baseline up to the northern end of the tenement. This earthmoving work will involve the use of heavy machinery, which may require additional heritage clearances.
