Historical workings at the Glenloth Goldfield were the target for 10 exploratory RC drillholes put down by Minotaur Exploration during May-June 2006 as a PACE Initiative Year 3 project. Their accepted proposal was to drill a series of RC percussion holes below newly disclosed anomalous gold-in-calcrete soil sample values of up to 869 ppb Au, that define a linear northwest - trending zone lying along strike from historical workings at the Royal Tiger and Ivanhoe mines. The drilling would give an indication of the style and tenor of bedrock mineralisation, and would test the structural controls. It would also provide basic geological information in an area that has received relatively little attention in recent years. Resultant drilling completed near the Ivanhoe, Kingfisher, Monarch and Glen Markie mines totalled 933 m. Composite 4 m samples containing elevated gold (>100 ppb Au) were obtained from seven of the ten drillholes. Other trace metals, notably Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn, were not significantly elevated. The maximum gold value obtained was 651 ppb Au from the depth interval 32-36 m in drillhole GLRC523, which was the easternmost of four closely-spaced drillholes sited between the Glen Markie and Royal Tiger mines. The succeeding 4 m sample interval (from 36-40 m depth) within the same drillhole was also anomalous at 192 ppb Au, and these intervals correspond to a shear zone filled with brown clay. Re-assaying of the recovered drill cuttings from this hole, at 1 m wide intervals, revealed that the most gold-anomalous zones recorded values of 1.31 ppm and 1.09 ppm Au from the depth intervals 35-36 m and 36-37 m respectively: these represent the highest gold values obtained in the drilling programme. In general, most of the other holes' assay results were disappointingly low and did not match expectations, irrespective of whether the drill samples were derived either from near known mineralisation or from below highly anomalous surface gold-in-calcrete occurrences. The mineralisation that was found downhole occurs predominantly within moderately to highly altered basement lithologies, and is thought to be mostly supergene in character. Narrow quartz veins and vein arrays and shear zones are weakly to moderately auriferous, while secondary enrichment of gold has occurred within oxidised and weathered basement lithologies.
