As part of the PACE Initiative Year 3 collaborative drilling projects between PIRSA and the minerals industry, Goldstream carried out an approved programme of reverse circulation drilling on its Mount Woods area exploration tenements, into selected gravity lows to test the prospectivity of the area for buried sandstone-hosted uranium mineralisation. The planned programme consisted of 6 deep, vertical holes designed to test the metallogenetic suitability of the cover strata, and to assess their uranium content. However, upon work commencement actual difficult drilling conditions resulted in the completion of only three of the proposed holes for a total penetration of 494 m. In all of these open RC drillholes unconsolidated sands caused hole collapse, to the extent that drilling was abandoned. It is planned to complete the remainder of the programme when a rotary mud drilling rig is available. The holes intersected sands and gravels of the Cadna-Owie Formation, followed by thick sequences of claystone and mudstone persisting to total depth of the holes. The stratigraphic association of these latter clay-rich sediments is unknown. No anomalous radioactivity was noted from the drill cuttings. Groundwater sample and drill cuttings sample analyses returned no significantly anomalous values, and thus the uranium prospectivity of the sedimentary cover channels / basins in this area is now considered to be low.
