An area of outcropping Oligocene Gambier Limestone located 8 km west of Mount Gambier was investigated for its potential to supply high purity dolomite as a raw material used in glass manufacture. Licensee Unimin Australia is seeking to replace mined-out reserves and augment dwindling dolomite supplies from its Tantanoola quarry with possible equivalent quality resources extractable by shallow mining from the same type of source beds within the basal Gambier Limestone sequence. After conducting a review of previous ACI dolomite exploration data for the district, a programme of reconnaissance and follow-up rock chip sampling (182 samples) of promising outcrops was undertaken, preparatory to appraisal drilling (8 shallow RC holes for a total of 48.5 m) to obtain fresh bedrock samples for qualitative XRF analysis. This work was not able to locate a resource of material that is suitable for the purpose intended.
