As part of an exploration project targeting possible large-scale opal occurrences hidden at depth beneath marine shale outcrops in the Stuart Range 'Breakaway' country, the subject licence was taken up to cover certain ground lying adjacent to the western margin of the Coober Pedy Precious Stones Field, 55 km north-west of Coober Pedy township. Here no formal exploration for opal had previously been attempted, so no public records exist of any private work that may have been done there. The licensee's conduct of photogeological and DTM image interpretation, research into available subsurface stratigraphic information obtained from only a few drillholes, plus some limited field reconnaissance, were able to identify geological relationships of opal target zones which appear to be similar to those of opal-bearing areas on that Precious Stones Field. However, no sites of exposed opal mineralisation were located on EL 2675. The newly available DTM data show that the tenement contains extensive topographically elevated ground under which relatively thick sections of Cretaceous Bulldog Shale are likely to be preserved. If recent erosion has not yet dissected such terrain to a depth sufficient to generate opal 'floaters', a prospector's usual primary indicators of buried opal seams, then such places should hold good potential for discovering opal through scout drilling.
