The Moonta North Project is located in the Port Pirie area, and consists of a number of scattered Exploration Licences extending from Port Broughton in the south to the Crystal Brook area in the north. Avoca Resource's primary objective in the project area is to determine the potential for economic basement-hosted iron-oxide associated copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation such as that found at Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill, Ernest Henry and Moonta-Wallaroo. Previous exploration carried out in the area has included the drilling of several diamond holes in the late 1970s. During the 2004/2005 licence year reporting period, Avoca Resources and its joint venture partner Teck Cominco together re-evaluated all of the historical exploration data from within the project area, to define significant targets for diamond drill testing. A promising, possible diamond-bearing target was generated at Redhill on EL 2749 by the re-evaluation work, and so drilling of a diamond cored hole was recommended to test for possible kimberlitic intrusive material related to a stand-out isolated circular magnetic feature which lies near the western edge of the crustal scale G2 gravity lineament corridor. During September-October 2005, Avoca Resources drill tested this one magnetic anomaly, and rotary mud / vertical NQ diamond cored hole RED001 (167.7 m precollared), put down to a total depth of 285.6 m, successfully located its source. Unfortunately, the magnetic source proved to be a dolerite intrusion and not a kimberlite, as was initially hoped. No significant geochemical anomalism was returned from any of the 64 downhole drill core samples assayed. No further work was recommended to be done at Redhill, and accordingly this portion of the tenement has been surrendered.
