Through the financial assistance of PIRSA's PACE Initiative, Iluka Resources was able to undertake exploratory drilling activities looking for heavy mineral (HM) sands marine placer deposits in the eastern Eucla Basin, as part of the Year 4 subsidy programme. The principal aim of this latest PACE funding proposal was to test whether the WNW-ESE trending linear features observed in the Maralinga Embayment of the eastern Eucla Basin represent younger (Neogene) shoreline features than those already identified. The drilling work undertaken during the Year 4 programme has provisionally validated this interpretation, although further work will be required to conclusively demonstrate this concept. For various reasons (approvals, logistics, rig availability) only a part of the original Year 4 programme was completed, but the limited results obtained indicate that the WNW- ESE trending interpreted shoreline features may in fact represent near-shore marine sediments. 75 NQ size aircore holes were drilled over 16 line km along 5 traverses, for a total penetration of 1596 m, with an average hole depth of 21.3 m. The initial drilling carried out along traverse 3267/1, located 45 km north-east of Ceduna, discovered HM sands of 5-15% ore grade and up to 4.5 m thick, over a strandline width of up to 800 m, representing a significant discovery which has been named the Dromedary prospect. Subsequent appraisal drilling done along nearby parallel traverses also delineated some thicker HM intercepts, but of lower grade (<3%, and between 3 to 15 m thick). This new HM occurrence is hosted within a J-shaped palaeoshoreline embayment feature that is geometrically similar to those seen at other Iluka HM discoveries in the Eucla Basin. The deposit is interpreted to be hosted by a fine to medium-grained beach sand facies. Significant intercepts (defined by being greater than 0.5% HM, more than 3 m thick) were returned from three traverses (3267/1, 3267/2 and 3267/3). The maximum assayed grade amongst 508 samples submitted was 14.6% HM from drillhole YE1521, in a 25% split of drill cuttings taken between 25.5-27 m depth. The mineralisation appears to be hosted in the lower of two separate geological sequences, although the relationship between these two sequences requires further investigation (i.e. drilling) in a westerly direction to determine whether the upper sequence has the potential to host heavy mineral occurrences.
