As part of a search for possible economic Alligator Rivers or McArthur River (NT) style epicratonic, unconformity - related sedimentary uranium deposits in an area located west of Rudall on central Eyre Peninsula, the licensee conducted 3190 line km of aerial magnetic/radiometric surveying over the now relinquished ground, plus trial airborne TEMPEST electromagnetic profiles totalling 67 line km, and ground follow-up and geochemical rock chip sampling of resultant radiometric anomalies. Attempts to image the prospective Proterozoic sandstone-basement unconformity using the TEMPEST system, and to identify probable conductive graphite-rich zones within the Middleback Subgroup rocks, both encountered problems with the physical nature of the terrain, including highly conductive saline cover sediments which effectively masked the EM response. The radiometric response over the area is also generally low, and only five of twenty-one low priority radiometric anomalies were ground checked, with four outcrop samples collected for analysis. The assay results provided no encouragement to warrant further exploration for uranium on the relinquished ground. The inferred depth to basement is very great, principally due to the Polda Basin sediment fill, which currently available remote sensing techniques are unable to penetrate.
