An engineering consultancy firm was engaged by the mine's new operators to review the current situation regarding storage of ore processing mill tailings at the Mount Gunson Project site, and was asked to prepare recommendations for the continued development of the tailings dams to allow storage of mill wastes that will be produced over the next 9-12 months. It was proposed that the embankment crest of the existing Stage 3 (largest) tailings dam be raised by approximately 1-2 m to safely accomodate another 500,000 tonnes of tailings fill. Preferred methods of embankment construction and of subsequent tailings handling have been suggested, to confer the most efficient management plan. An estimated 16,000 cubic m of construction material will need to be placed upon the embankment crest.
