Two negative magnetic anomalies within EL 3228 Mount Darling that were believed to be caused by buried layered ultramafic intrusive rocks of the Mesoproterozoic Giles Complex were the targets of the subject exploration by Crossland Minerals, since these rocks are considered prospective for hosting economic nickel and platinoid metal mineralisation. The two small anomalies lie approximately 3 km south of the SA/NT state border, and 50 km east of the Stuart Highway, on the eastern margin of the Musgrave Block. Elsewhere in the Musgrave Block, mapped layered ultramafic Giles Complex intrusions are known to be associated with negative (remnant) magnetic anomalies. Also relevant are certain stream sediment geochemical data obtained from the vicinity of the two anomalies of interest, which are anomalous for palladium (>4 ppb). As an approved PACE Initiative Year 4 subsidised drilling project, the licensee undertook a bedrock geochemical sampling programme across both magnetic anomalies, using an auger drill rig. Four traverses, each around 2 km in length, were shallowly drilled (57 holes totalling 206 m) over the period September 28 - 6 October 2007, the holes being spaced 160 m apart. Some of the holes were drilled as deep as 8 m, and most appeared to have reached bedrock or decomposed bedrock. Bottom hole drill cuttings samples were collected from each hole and analysed for a wide range of elements. The tenor of assay results was generally subdued.
