An area located 3 km south of the South Australia/Northern Territory border and 50 km east of the Stuart Highway, on the eastern margin of the Musgrave Block, was considered prospective for nickel and platinoid metal mineralisation hosted by layered intrusive ultramafic rocks of the Proterozoic Giles Complex, thought to have been emplaced along major east-west trending fault structures. The nature of the basement in this area is largely unknown due to widespread masking by up to 8-15 m thickness of transported Quaternary cover sediments. Initial exploratory work included the compilation and review of existing data, plus the conduct of a stream sediment geochemical survey and reconnaissance geological mapping. Results indicated two places that were likely to have target potential, where two negative magnetic anomalies occur that might be caused by layered intrusive rocks. This idea was inferred because, elsewhere in the Musgrave Block, Giles Complex layered intrusions are known to be associated with negative (remnant) magnetic anomalies. Furthermore, the newly acquired stream sediment geochemical data from 43 sample points showed that the said two areas are geochemically anomalous for palladium (>4 ppb). To test the prospectivity of the target anomalies, four traverses of shallow auger drilling (57 holes put down to blade refusal, for a total penetration of 206 m), to sample the bedrock at 200 m hole spacing, were completed in the third quarter of 2007, partly assisted by PACE Initiative funding obtained from PIRSA. However, the bedrock sample assay results [separately reported in the PACE Project DPY4-35 final report - see Env 11499] had generally low values for all elements of interest, particularly nickel and copper. After making an unsuccessful attempt to secure a replacement joint venture partner for help with continuing the exploration, Paradigm decided in mid-2008 to surrender the licence.
