During 2004 MER Geological Survey Branch officers conducted detailed mapping within four small areas of the western Musgrave Ranges, as a follow-on to recently ceased prior company exploration, with the similar aim of evaluating the magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE mineral prospectivity of Giles Complex intrusions outcropping there. During this government-run work programme a total of 147 rock samples were taken and submitted for whole rock geochemical analysis. The assay results obtained included elevated Pt, Pd, Cr and Ni values (available online via the SARIG webserver, http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/minerals/sarig). The suite of outcrop lithologies found within the mapped areas were described by consultants' reports to MER on their detailed petrological investigations of selected rock samples. Visible Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation, of a type similar to that discovered at the Nebo and Babel Ni-Cu-PGE deposits in Western Australia in 2000, was identified in an outcrop of the Ngunala ultramafic intrusion located on mapping subarea T2423 D. The latter find is the first documented occurrence of visible pentlandite and chalcopyrite associated with the Giles Complex within the South Australian portion of the Musgrave Province.
