Exploration of two now-relinquished licence sub-areas situated a short distance west of Port Augusta and Whyalla respectively, near the eastern edge of the Middleback Range, sought to find possible economic buried epithermal/hydrothermal gold deposits or Olympic Dam style IOCG deposits that may have formed in the vicinity of the Roopena Fault Zone. Reported activities successively performed by several joint venture partners have included RAB drilling on geophysical and geochemical targets (11 holes for 665 m of total penetration), reconnaissance calcrete geochemical sampling, the conduct of a detailed ground gravity survey over the existing gravity anomaly at Target 1C (238 stations read along 7 lines spaced 400 m apart, with readings taken at 250 m and 100 m intervals along these lines), and PACE Initiative partly subsidised RC drilling of a single hole to TD 252 m. No significant IOCG mineralisation was encountered downhole in the Proterozoic basement rocks; lithologies consisted mainly of Roopena Volcanics altered basalts and intimately associated sediments (sandstone and minor claystone), while a relatively unaltered fresh dolerite (Gairdner Dyke) was penetrated at the base of the hole, from 238-252 m depth. Drill sample precious and base metal assays were generally low, except for intercepts of 1.0g/t Au at 186-188 m depth, and 2860 ppm Cu at 180-181 m depth, both of these intervals being associated with thin dolomite veins. This result downgraded the potential for finding haematite-related IOCG mineralisation at this prospect, and the largely Minotaur-funded joint venture was discontinued.
