Exploration carried out by MIM to look for possible economic primary or secondary uranium deposits related to the Weekeroo Inlier of Palaeoproterozoic rocks has consisted of an airborne radiometric survey (750 line miles flown along E-W lines spaced 0.5 mile apart) and ground spectrometric and geochemical follow-up of 28 low to middle order radiometric anomalies, plus sampling of groundwater bores for dissolved uranium levels. Most of the radiometric anomalies examined were found to be associated with granitic and migmatitic zones which have a higher uranium content than the surrounding Adelaidean metasediments. However, none of these zones contain uranium concentrations that are appreciably higher than published averages for these rock types. The uranium in groundwater is less than 40 ppb. Also, the uranium, thorium and gold contents of the basal Torresian conglomerate were found to be very low. Consequently, the chances of locating a suitable sedimentary trap for uranium on the licence were considered limited. The complementary search undertaken by joint venture partner Asarco, to look for significant base and precious metal mineralisation, comprised stream sediment sampling over the basement rocks (579 samples) and inspection of some historic copper workings. 14 zinc anomalies, 4 lead anomalies, 2 copper anomalies and 1 nickel anomaly were prospected, and from 7 of the anomalies in quartz-feldspar-mica schist or small quartz-haematite(-sulphide) veins, 39 rock chip samples were taken for assaying, yielding un-encouraging minor base metal values.
