Exploration for possible economic gold deposits in an area located approximately 25 km south of Olary addressed three principal objectives: . hydrothermally-sourced gold within quartz-albite-dolomite vein stockworks formed in phyllitic siltstones of the Burra Group at the Wadnaminga Anticline, that lie next to the Anabama Granite intrusion, and which largely resemble the 'honeycomb texture' weathered veins typically worked at numerous small historical surface mines on the Wadnaminga and Taltabooka Goldfields; . inferred Telfer-style stratabound mineralisation formed at the contact between the Tapley Hill Formation and the Tarcowie Siltstone; and . large scale, placer type gold occurrences deposited within the Appila Tillite and Wilyerpa Formation. Work consisted of a 1:10,000 scale low level colour aerial photographic survey flown in August 1983, a high resolution aeromagnetic survey (line spacing 250 m; altitude 80 m) covering Utah's adjacent ELs 1102, 1163 and 1234, which was flown by Aerodata Pty Ltd in October 1984, 1:10,000 scale geological mapping of the known most mineralised prospects, extensive surface rock chip, soil, and mine lode grab geochemical sampling, auger bedrock geochemical sampling (683 holes totalling 1664.85 m), RAB drilling (863 holes totalling 2942.5 m), RC percussion drilling (7 holes totalling 220 m), diamond drilling (16 HQ/NQ coreholes totalling 1775 m), petrographic studies of many drill core samples, lead isotope determinations on lead ore samples from three old mines, some pioneering computer workstation image enhancement processing of the aeromagnetic data, plus ground magnetic and gravity surveying at the Golden Sophia prospect aeromagnetic bullseye anomaly and at the North South mine, seeking possible buried palaeochannels, followed by geochemical sampling of Cainozoic floodplain gravels. Although spot elevated gold values were common at the surface, mainly close to the historic shallow mine workings, only minor low grade gold intersections were recorded in the many new drillholes put down to evaluate the lodes at depth. An orientation radiometric survey, carried out to determine whether spectrometry could be useful in locating areas of alteration, was inconclusive.
