Exploration for possible economic buried sedimentary uranium mineralisation, thought to be associated with an interpreted palaeodrainage EM anomaly originating within Mesozoic or Tertiary strata in two areas near Marree, addressed the potential for finding palaeochannel sandstone-hosted deposits in these strata. Work consisted of ground-truthing airborne radiometric anomalies and of investigating outcrops of prospective sandstone units. Scintillometric readings taken over weathered Tertiary Eyre Formation ranged between 30-1400 counts per second, but four geochemical samples assayed from lithologies having the highests counts returned only 9-40 ppm U. It appears that the observed uranium radiation is coming from weathered rocks lying at and immediately below the basal Tertiary and Quaternary unconformities, and therefore it is probably pedogenic in nature, and is considered to be originally sourced by transported regolithic material. However, within the project area the targeted sandstone-prone unweathered formations are not associated with airborne or ground scintillometric radiometric anomalism, and consequently it was concluded that both licence areas' uranium prospectivity is much decreased.
