Exploration for possible buried economic iron oxide - associated copper-gold (IOCG) mineral deposit targets within the subject area of the north-western Gawler Ranges utilised existing and newly acquired regional gravity data to attempt to identify anomalous altered basement zones in the vicinity of three major, long-lived regional crustal shear structures. Within the now relinquished ground, which in general is covered by 1 km x 1 km spaced gravity stations, the acquisition by Minotaur in October 2005 of infill gravity data at 400 m x 400 m spacing addressed a regional gravity feature of interest noted in the central licence subarea. Its refined residual gravity response was then seen to coincide directly with a curvilinear magnetic feature, suggesting that it might represent a magnetic and dense source body. The geophysical best-fit model utilised an average density of 3.1 g/cc that could be indicative of either a magnetite-hosted, IOCG type altered source body or a magnetite-rich formation. However, subsequent drilling of 7 exploratory vertical aircore holes totalling 316.5 m was unable to identify any rocks that could cause this coincident gravity/magnetic anomaly. Surface calcrete sampling, which was previously extensively performed by other explorers across the entire present licence area, plus additional limited calcrete sampling done by Minotaur (13 samples) over the middle section of the central subarea, had failed to reveal any anomalous trace metal geochemistry : this deficiency would tend to suggest that the above geophysical features do not reflect an IOCG-mineralised system, nor a gold-only occurrence either. Latterly, processing by Toro Energy of NOAA satellite thermal infrared data and of some regional airborne EM survey data which it had acquired in July-August 2006 has revealed a Tertiary fluvial palaeochannel buried within the licence central subarea: however, further interpretation of available radiometric data has indicated that the palaeochannel would have limited potential to host sedimentary uranium mineralisation. Separate processing by Minotaur of the AEM data to look for late-time basement conductors was unsuccessful.
