An area within the north-western Stuart Shelf which lies about 80 km west of Olympic Dam and 40 km south of Prominent Hill was explored for possible similar IOCG-U type economic mineral deposits by a new industry entrant uranium explorer, Uranium Exploration Australia (UXA). During November-December 2005, part of a 6612 line km regional low-level airborne magnetic/radiometric survey (200 m flight line spacing, 50 m mean terrain clearance) was flown across the northern half of the subject licence, and resulting geophysical anomalies of interest were followed up with ground scintillometric scans, plus geological prospecting and rock chip sampling (8 samples). Reported uranium assay values of 2.8 ppm U at Scrape Quarry and 5.3 ppm U in the vicinity of Old Bluff Bore prompted UXA to drill one exploratory vertical RC hole (SC1) near the former site, but which failed to reach its target depth, being terminated at 95 m within Adelaidean ?Tregolana Shale. No mineralisation or anomalous downhole geochemistry was encountered. Subsequent exploration comprised the testing of two main areas of interest that had been identified on the basis of a preliminary geophysical interpretation. The primary focus was centred on an interpreted north-easterly oriented fault, while the second area of interest featured a north-westerly trending magnetic anomaly. Detailed ground-based gravity surveys (1353 stations read at 250-500 m spacings) were conducted over both of these zones, which were modelled and interpreted in conjunction with pre-existing magnetic data. Five potential IOCG-U targets were defined by this work. All five targets were drilled during June 2007 (by 5 vertical rotary mud/diamond cored holes with a total penetration of 2470.6 m, including 1391.9 m cored): all of the drillholes were terminated within the Pandurra Formation. No mineralisation was encountered, and no significant levels of silver, gold or copper were returned by drill core sample assaying, but discrete elevated levels of uranium, up to 50 ppm U, were detected in cores cut in drillholes 07GW04 and 07GW05. No further field work was conducted after June 2007, whilst an office-based review of the mineralisation potential of the licence was undertaken. This ultimately downgraded the apparent prospectivity, and so a decision was made to surrender tenure.
