In a search for possible roll-front type sedimentary uranium deposits inferred as likely to have formed within the Tertiary sedimentary sequence overlying the southern Cooper/Eromanga Basins petroleum province, an initial 18 exploratory RAB holes totalling 673 m were drilled in EL 3803 on a 1.5 km x 3 km grid during July-August 2008, and found some few sandstone palaeochannel sediments, but no pore-filling uranium mineralisation, e.g. carnotite was visible in the drill cuttings, and no anomalous radioactivity was detected on calibrated downhole gamma ray logs. The highest gamma log value measured was 44 counts per second from grey clay in hole CC03 over the depth interval 34-35 m. It was concluded that the target Tertiary sedimentary sequence is far too remotely situated to entrap uranium released from potential primary source rocks. In addition, foreseen major problems of gaining ground access to drillsites in the remote and undeveloped terrain mean that any further exploration would be very costly, and is not warranted by the results obtained to date. Accordingly, the decision was made to surrender tenure.
