Exploration of three small areas in the Poochera district, for possible economic buried Tertiary palaeocoastal marine placer deposits of zircon and other heavy minerals, has consisted only of a first-pass aircore drilling assessment of inferred prospective host sediment sequences thought to be underlying interpreted significant topographic features seen on digital elevation model imagery. 26 vertical aircore holes having a total penetration of 1285 m were drilled at roughly 400 m spacing along three traverses during March 2009, but the drilling failed to encounter any detrital heavy mineral contents of > 1% or the targeted preserved beach strand facies sediments. A review was then made of the geological model for Tertiary sedimentation within the licence subareas, which downgraded their heavy mineral exploration potential, and so the ground was surrendered.
